Bridging the Treatment Gap: Expanding Epilepsy Care in Kenya
Epilepsy affects 1% of the global population, with the highest rates in sub-Saharan Africa. In Kenya, a groundbreaking study led by Dr. Jane von Gaudecker aims to expand access to epilepsy care in low-resource settings through task-sharing and technology. Supported by a $2.4 million grant, the BEACON project will train healthcare workers and implement a digital record system to improve care in rural communities.

With the backing of a Curriculum Enhancement Grant and the Richard and Diane Billings Faculty Award, Brower is revolutionizing the curriculum through advanced technology and high-fidelity simulations. Her projects are empowering future nurses to excel in acute and critical care, with a special focus on enhancing simulation debriefings and integrating obstetric content into critical care training.

Dr. Jamie Ann Rausch, assistant professor at IU School of Nursing in Fort Wayne, is exploring the biological links between inflammation and heart failure. Her research focuses on leptin and adiponectin, two hormones with opposing effects on inflammation, and their combined influence on chronic disease risks. By analyzing the leptin-to-adiponectin ratio, she aims to uncover early indicators of inflammation in heart failure patients.
