Megan Szymanski, a Traditional BSN student who will graduate in May 2024, has been chosen as one of IUPUI's Top 100 students for 2024. Below, learn more about Megan's journey at the IU School of Nursing at IUPUI and the organizations and groups she's chosen to volunteer with during her time at IUPUI.
Why did you choose to pursue your degree at the IU School of Nursing at IUPUI?
I chose nursing and IUSON at IUPUI because of the program's amazing connections to the surrounding hospital systems for clinical rotations. I have been able to practice skills at three out of the four Level 1 Trauma Centers in the state, less than a mile away from campus.
IUPUI and IUSON also give out many scholarships to aid students in obtaining their education. I was able to pay for my undergraduate degree all through financial aid!
Who has inspired you during your educational journey?
The person who inspired me the most during my educational journey is Jeanette Conrad, an experienced professor and lecturer at IU School of Nursing in Indianapolis. She motivated me to get involved in my ICU rotations, further developed my critical thinking skills, and built my confidence in my nursing skills and practice. I could not imagine being a nurse without her unconditional influence and support.
What has been your favorite or most memorable class/educational opportunity while studying at IUPUI, and why?
My favorite educational opportunity while studying at IUPUI was being placed in the Emergency Medical Trauma Center (EMTC/ER) department at Methodist Hospital, one of the Level 1 Trauma Centers in the state during my critical care rotation. I was able to provide nursing care for high acuity patients and apply my classroom knowledge to aid in patient care.
What activities or organizations are you involved in, and why did you choose to become involved or volunteer with these groups?
I am involved in the local Student Nurses Association as co-president, the Indiana Association of Nursing Students as treasurer, the National Student Nurses Association, the BSN Tutoring Program, and IUSON's Student Ambassadors.
Additionally, I serve as an Alpha Chapter Intern for Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society, mentor for the Student Nurse Partnership Program, member of the American Association of Cancer Research, participant in Jagathon, and member in Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma Honor Societies. I also volunteer for Overdose Lifeline, Gleaner's Food Pantry, Wheeler Mission, and the IU Student Outreach Clinic.
I chose to get involved in various organizations out of my passion for nursing and a desire for personal and professional growth, as well as to make a positive impact in my local community. Engaging in leadership roles, networking opportunities, and community service activities allowed me to broaden my horizons and connect with others beyond the academic setting. Overall, my involvement in these diverse organizations has enriched my education and contributed to my development as a future healthcare professional while positively impacting individuals on campus and within the Indianapolis community.
Why was it important to you to take on extra activities or leadership roles while studying at IUPUI?
Taking on extra activities or leadership roles while studying at IUPUI was important to me for several reasons. These opportunities allowed me to develop a well-rounded skill set beyond the classroom, enhancing my leadership, communication, and organizational abilities. Additionally, engaging in community service and leadership roles allowed me to give back to the community and address health disparities, aligning with my values of advocacy, integrity, and my aspirations as a future healthcare professional.
What are your plans following the completion of your Bachelor of Science in Nursing studies?
I plan on working in an ICU at a Level 1 Trauma Center in Indiana after graduation!
