Global Programs

Think and practice globally

Children at study abroad location with nurse

Study abroad courses, bi-national exchanges, and international service learning programs provide a broad array of learning experiences for students at IU School of Nursing. You will increase your experiences with diverse healthcare systems and develop a sense of global citizenship. The healthcare community benefits as well. Graduates with intercultural experience increase their knowledge and understanding of varied approaches to organizing nursing and healthcare, and develop knowledge of specific health conditions that impact global populations.

Our Office of Global Affairs aims to increase appreciation and respect for diversity among students, faculty, staff, community partners, and patients.

Strategic international partnerships

Strategic international partnerships provide our faculty members with opportunities to use their individual and collective expertise to contribute to advancing nursing education and research globally.

These partnerships are funded by IU School of Nursing as well as federal and private mechanisms. The Indiana Nursing Abroad program—a joint endeavor that includes IUSON partner hospitals, Indiana nursing associations, and IU School of Nursing alumni—leverages a broad array of expertise to increase interest, support, participation, and impact in our global health work.

Global health lecture series

On our IUPUI campus, speaker series highlight campus/university initiatives in global health and showcase our nursing faculty and student involvement. Past speakers addressed issues from study abroad experiences, including midwifery in Liberia and traditional Chinese medicine and nursing care in Thailand.

The Beverly C. Flynn Nursing in the Global Community Lectureship is a major highlight of this series. This forum brings a visiting lecturer to IU School of Nursing to share their knowledge and experiences concerning international research and scholarship.
