Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner

Provide care to complex, acutely ill patients from adolescence to end of life

The Indiana University School of Nursing’s Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) track is led by dedicated, doctoral-prepared faculty who are committed to student success. Our rigorous curriculum focuses on management of acute and chronic illness in the adolescent, adult, obstetric, and geriatric patient populations in an interactive format that include in-person lectures, expert guest lectures, and hands-on high-fidelity simulation and laboratory, where advanced skills such as endotracheal intubation, central line insertion, thoracostomy tube placement, and other invasive procedures are taught.

Small cohort size in the AGACNP track affords students the ability to work closely with expert faculty to develop the skills needed to provide comprehensive health care to acutely and critically ill patients in a variety of settings.  Indiana University is partnered with The Simulation Center at Fairbanks Hall, where students are immersed in faculty-led computer simulated clinical scenarios in a safe learning environment. Access to a state-of-the-art simulation facility enhances the learning experience of our students by developing communication, critical thinking, and decision-making skills to prepare you for an integral role on the healthcare team as an acute care nurse practitioner.

Clinical Experiences

Student clinical experiences are a vital part of the AGACNP curriculum. Clinical experiences are coordinated by faculty with clinical partners across central Indiana. Our students are paired with expert preceptors and immersed in high-acuity clinical settings, including level I trauma centers. Additional clinical experiences may include:

  • Internal medicine/hospitalist services
  • Cardiology
  • Cardiothoracic surgery
  • Critical care medicine
  • Neurology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Pulmonology
  • Transplant services

Certification

Upon graduation, you are eligible for certification through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). IU's AGACNP graduates consistently score above the national average on board certification examination. As an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), you will qualify to apply for prescriptive authority from the Indiana Licensure Board.
