Gillienne Boyd, a Traditional BSN student who plans to graduate in December 2024, has been chosen as one of IUPUI's Top 100 students for 2024. Below, learn more about Gillienne's journey at the IU School of Nursing at IUPUI and the organizations and groups she's chosen to volunteer with during her time at IUPUI.
Why did you choose to pursue your degree at the IU School of Nursing at IUPUI?
I chose to pursue a degree at IU School of Nursing at IUPUI because of all the opportunities that are available to me here. When I toured IUPUI and saw three hospitals on campus I knew I wanted to come here.
Who has inspired you during your educational journey?
Someone who has inspired me on my educational journey at IUPUI has been Tonya Coltrain.
What has been your favorite or most memorable class/educational opportunity while studying at IUPUI, and why?
I want to pursue pediatric nursing. So, my favorite educational opportunity has been getting to have clinicals at Riley.
What activities or organizations are you involved in, and why did you choose to become involved or volunteer with these groups?
I am currently the blood drive coordinator of the Student Nurses' Association and the co-director of rule and teams for the Regatta Steering Committee. In the past, I have also been a part of the Residence Hall Association, Hall Council, Undergraduate Student Government, and National Residence Hall Honorary. I got involved in these student organizations to grow as a leader and to make IUPUI a better campus.
Why was it important to you to take on extra activities or leadership roles while studying at IUPUI?
It is important to take on extra activities and leadership roles because it helps you grow important skills such as communication, leadership, and teamwork, and helps you network with other individuals who may not be in the same major or year as you.
What are your plans following the completion of your Bachelor of Science in
Nursing studies?
After I complete my Bachelor of Science in Nursing studies, I plan to move to Florida and become a pediatric nurse.
What does the recognition of being a Top 100 Outstanding Student mean to you?
Being recognized as a Top 100 Outstanding Student means a lot to me. It shows me that hard work and dedication pay off.
