Developing Your Skills as a CNS Preceptor

Learn about many concepts and ideas you’ll need to consider as a preceptor for Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) students, as well as new CNS orientees.

 

Course Information

Through self-paced modules, you’ll learn about organizing and structuring clinical experiences, addressing challenging clinical situations, exploring feedback strategies, and planning evaluation of the new or soon-to-be CNS. You’ll learn about best practices in communication, teaching and learning, and evaluating performance. Finally, you will come away from this course comfortable and confident in guiding students and new hires/orientees through their clinical experiences, and be prepared to put them on a path to success in their CNS career.

Module 1: Organizing the precepted experience

Upon completion of this module, learners will be able to:

  1. Organize and structure clinical experiences for students or newly hired CNSs (“orientees”).
  2. Describe preclinical evaluation of student or orientee to assess learning needs.
  3. Develop an orientation plan for student or orientee to ensure clear communication.

Module 2: Engaging the student/orientee

Upon completion of this module, learners will be able to:

  1. Communicate effectively with faculty, students, and newly hired CNS orientees.
  2. Utilize a variety of effective teaching and learning strategies with students and orientees.
  3. Address challenging student or orientee situations in the clinical setting.

Module 3: Providing useful feedback

Upon completion of this module, learners will be able to:

  1. Explore strategies for providing student or orientee feedback.
  2. Develop a plan to evaluate student or orientee competency and provide feedback.
  3. Describe ways to instill professionalism in the student or orientee.

Contact Hours and Disclosures

Successful Completion of the Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Activity
In order to receive contact hours for the CNE activity you must complete the online course evaluation at the end of the course period.

No commercial support has been received for this activity. The absence of commercial bias will be evaluated in the institute evaluation survey.

This course will expire on May 1, 2024, and will be reviewed and revised as appropriate at or before that date.

3 or more group rate: A group rate of $99 each is available for 3 or more individuals registering from the same organization, taking the course during the same 30-day timeframe.
