Majority will seek Indiana licensure and join statewide workforce
The Indiana University School of Nursing welcomed 381 nursing students to its undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing program for the fall 2023 semester, the largest cohort of undergraduate students in the school’s 109-year history.
The IU School of Nursing is composed of three campus locations: Bloomington, Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. There are 120 newly admitted students in Bloomington, 169 in Indianapolis and 92 in Fort Wayne for a total of 1,335 undergraduate students returning for the fall semester across all three campuses.
“We are excited to welcome this record-breaking class,” said Robin Newhouse, dean of the IU School of Nursing. “They bring enthusiasm about the profession of nursing, a new lens to shape the future of the profession and innovative ideas to health and healthcare. While at IUSON, they will become critical thinkers, shaping their future as clinicians and nurse leaders who employ best practices to care for their patients and continually investigate new and better ways to provide that care.”
The IU School of Nursing offers three tracks in the BSN program: traditional, accelerated, and RN to BSN Degree Completion. The traditional track is designed for students who do not hold a college degree, most typically high school students. The accelerated track provides a transition path to nursing for those who hold a college degree in another field of study. This program typically can be completed in 16 months. Finally, the statewide online RN to BSN Degree Completion option is designed for nurses who hold a two-year degree and would like to earn their BSN.
“Our data shows that 95% of IU School of Nursing graduates apply for licensure in the state of Indiana,” said Rebecca Ellis, executive associate dean for academic affairs. “These students learn in the clinical spaces that will one day become their employers. We take immense pride in educating the nurses that will make up such a large component of Indiana’s workforce.”
