Research and active involvement in the nursing profession are vital parts of the IU School of Nursing’s mission to inspire lifelong learning among our profession and to create knowledge that improves the health of the people we serve.

We are very proud to announce that Dr. Deanna Reising has been named by the American Academy of Nursing to its 2019 Class of Academy Fellows.
Deanna joins IUSON faculty members Dr. Jennifer Embree and Dr. Julie Otte and IUSON alumnus Chad Priest in being selected as one of 2019’s Academy Fellows. Deanna and her fellow inductees were honored at a ceremony during the Academy's annual policy conference, "Transforming Health, Driving Policy", on October 24-26, in Washington, D.C.
Members of the 2019 Class of New Fellows were selected via a highly-competitive process. Two hundred thirty-one new fellows were selected nationwide based on their extraordinary efforts and commitment to increase access, reduce cost, and improve quality through nursing theory, practice, innovation, and science. Induction into the Academy is a significant milestone in a nurse leader’s career, where their accomplishments are honored by their peers in the nursing profession.
Deanna is a nationally-recognized, widely-published expert on improving educational and patient outcomes through inter-professional education and practice. In addition to being selected as a 2019 Academy Fellow, Deanna has been designated a Distinguished Scholar and Fellow by both the National Academies of Practice and the National League for Nursing’s Academy of Nursing Education. She is also a Macy Faculty Scholar and past winner of Sigma Theta Tau International’s Elizabeth Russel Bedford Award for Excellence in Education.

This past year, Dr. Pei-Shiun Chang became the first IUSON Bloomington faculty member to be awarded a grant from the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) of the prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH)!
Pei is co-investigator on a research team that was awarded a two-year $436,000 grant for their project entitled, Assessing Environmental Exposures to Persistent Organic Pollutants in Assisted Living Facilities. The research will study the connection between ambient conditions, personal exposures, and biomarkers of exposure to persistent organic pollutants among residents of senior care facilities located in Indiana.
Other members of Pei’s inter-professional research team include: Amina Salamova (PI), Assistant Research Scientist, O’Neil School of Public and Environmental Affairs; IUB, Michael Hendryx, Professor, School of Public Health; and Steven Lacey, Professor and Chair of Environmental Health Science, IUPUI.
In the last issue of The Nursing News, we told you about the important work that Dr. Greg Carter and his students are doing with home healthcare visits to patients in Orange and Greene Counties who are suffering from diabetes. Those efforts have definitely been noticed, as Greg was awarded the Indiana Rural Health Association’s 2019 Education Award. In announcing the award, IU’s Center for Rural Engagement said: “We are honored to work with Dr. Carter and his students as they provide a new approach to rural healthcare.”
We like to say that our faculty members are “one in a million”, and now we have the numbers to prove it!
IUSON Bloomington SIM Center Coordinator Sally Gindling is only one of three people in Indiana and only one of fifty-one people in the world to hold both the Certified Healthcare Simulations Operations Specialist (CHSOSO) and the Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) designations awarded by the Society for Simulation Healthcare in Washington, D.C.
