IUSON Expanding Under IPFW Realignment

IU School of Nursing welcomed Fort Wayne as a member of the core school this July, under a realignment of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne approved by the boards of trustees of both universities last year. As part of the new structure, Indiana University will operate and manage all health sciences programs on the Fort Wayne campus, including nursing, medicine, dental education and social work. General education and prerequisite courses for these majors will continue to be provided by Purdue. This realignment redefines IU School of Nursing’s core campus to include Bloomington, IUPUI and Fort Wayne.

Purdue School of Nursing faculty and staff became part of IU on July 1, while students currently enrolled in the nursing program at Fort Wayne will continue their plan of study until they graduate, with the Purdue curriculum phased out gradually. The first Indiana University graduates from that campus are expected in 2021.

“We look forward to working with the excellent nursing faculty in Fort Wayne to continue providing top-tier nursing education to students in northeastern Indiana and the nearby region,” said Robin Newhouse, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, dean, IU School of Nursing. “As we focus on ensuring a smooth and successful transition for students and faculty, we’re committed to continuing the vibrant partnerships with the region’s healthcare community.”

As part of the new structure, Indiana University will operate and manage all health sciences programs on the Fort Wayne campus, including nursing, medicine, dental education and social work.

Working in partnership with the Fort Wayne faculty, the IU transition has been led by Susan Hendricks, EdD, MSN, RN, CNE, associate dean of the undergraduate program; Janice Buelow, PhD, RN, FAAN, associate dean for academic operations; Janet Fulton, PhD, FAAN, associate dean of the graduate program; and Linda Griffin, MBA, assistant dean for resource management. The transition plan includes a teach-out of the Purdue nursing curricula and the launch of IU’s curricula. Additionally, the school is preparing documents for both state and national accreditation organizations. As part of the transition, the team is working closely with Ann Obergfell, JD, RT(R), dean, IPFW College of Health and Human Services, and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and operations, Indiana University Fort Wayne, and the entire nursing school faculty.

“The IU health sciences programs will work to educate highly qualified, ethical health professionals who will serve the community, building on existing strong collaborations with local educational and clinical partners to provide more learning opportunities for our students,” Obergfell said. “We will continue to work hand-in-hand with Purdue Fort Wayne, the community and the region to ensure student success.”
