Dear Friends, Families, and Graduates of the Indiana University School of Nursing Bloomington Campus,

The 2016–17 academic year represents a season of change as we say thank you and farewell to our retiring Assistant Dean, Dr. Joyce Krothe, and at the same time usher in our first expanded BSN cohort. In this newsletter you will find a more complete tribute to Dr. Krothe’s career and service to the School of Nursing. One of her legacies was starting the Alumni Helping Students Scholarship to provide support for students who demonstrate financial need. Thank you to all that have contributed to this fund so far. I hope that all of our graduates will consider making a gift to this fund in Dr. Krothe’s honor and commemorating their graduation year. For instance, this past May’s graduates’ gift would be $20.16. An annual gift from each of you will make a significant difference in the lives of the students. If you are able to make a larger commitment, even more students can benefit from your generosity. The School of Nursing expanded enrollment as part of a larger plan to prepare for the coming of the Regional Academic Health Center. Much of the summer was spent reconfiguring the Nursing Learning Resource Center and developing new clinical partners so that we had the capacity to increase enrollment from 60 to 80 students this fall. We are most proud to welcome 11 men as part of the incoming class of 2019.

This fall we welcomed four new full-time faculty members. Our two new clinical assistant professors are Dr. Pei-Shiun Chang and Marsha Hughes-Gay. Dr. Chang comes to us as a recent graduate from Yale and holds certification as an acute care adult nurse practitioner. Ms. Hughes-Gay comes to us from the IUPUC campus and is in the dissertation phase of the IUSON PhD program. Our two full-time visiting professors are Deb Smith, who comes to us from hospice at Bloomington Hospital, and one of our own graduates, Derrick Garletts. We also are very pleased to announce that we now have a Certified Healthcare Simulation Operator, Sally Gindling, and a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator, Roxie Barnes, helping us to maintain the quality of our simulation program. I hope you enjoy reading about the many accomplishments of our very talented staff and faculty.

Finally, our website is in the process of getting a facelift. The new site is scheduled to roll out in March and will include more ways to help our alumni stay connected with their alma mater.
