I Am an IU Nurse

Being present in the moment

Away from work, Becky and her husband, Will (pictured at left), recently celebrated their second anniversary. Will is from Canada, and Becky says she will be forever grateful to IU’s Student Legal Services for helping the couple navigate “the tough fiancé visa/immigration/ green card process and making our happily-ever-after come true.” The couple was recently able to buy their first house together.

Becky enjoys watching movies and shows, playing games, reading books, spending time with her cats, baking, and gardening. “I think the most important thing for decompressing outside of the hospital is just doing something you really enjoy and disconnecting from everything else for a while, just being present in the moment.”

"Find a type of nursing that you love and that speaks to you, then go for it! Push yourself -- don't let what you think you can or can't do hold you back. Don't get in your own way -- with determination and hard work, you can reach your goals and go further than you think."

Looking back at her time here at IUSON BL, does Becky have any parting words of advice for our nursing students?

  • “Find a type of nursing that you love and that speaks to you,” she says, “then go for it! It doesn’t have to happen right away. It may take some time to find where your passion lies. If you don’t know what type of nursing lights that fire in your soul yet, that’s okay! Find a place or a unit full of people who encourage your love for nursing and that you think can help you grow – some days, the love of your job and the people around you are what keep you going.”
  • “Push yourself – don’t let what you think you can or can’t do hold you back. Don’t get in your own way – with determination and hard work, you can reach your goals and go further than you think.”
  • “Take care of yourself – give yourself the time to rest when you need it. You can’t take care of anyone else if you don’t take care of yourself. Your patients will thank you for it.”
  • “As you become more comfortable with the basics of nursing, really push yourself to understand the ‘why?’ of things when caring for patients – critical thinking really helps you to become a stronger nurse and a stronger advocate for your patients!”
