Dr. Sharron J. Crowder
Sharron J. Crowder, PhD, RN, ATSF, FAAN, is a Clinical Associate Professor at Indiana University School of Nursing. She also has the role of Special Assistant to the Dean for Health Policy Initiatives. She has held nursing positions in a variety of clinical and academic settings in the United States and abroad. Her teaching expertise is in health policy and advocacy, as well as leadership. She is known for her development of seven innovative models to empower nursing students, faculty, and healthcare providers in clinical practice for health policy and advocacy roles.
In 2019, Dr. Crowder was one of six fellows competitively selected for the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Health Policy Fellowship. She was the first nurse and African American to be selected from Indiana. From 2019-2020, Dr. Crowder participated in a one-year residential program in Washington, D.C. Her fellowship placement was with the U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on Education and Labor, Congressman Bobby Scott, Chair. She was assigned to the health policy team and focused on maternal health, telehealth, and COVID-19.
Dr. Crowder uses her leadership in serving on committees of national and international professional organizations. Her current positions include serving in the appointed position of co-chair of the Health Policy Committee, American Thoracic Society (ATS); Co-Director of the Leadership and Policy Mentoring Fellowship, Association of Black Nursing Faculty (ABNF); and Coordinator of the RWJF Health Policy Fellows Faculty Network. As a result of her health policy expertise, she is frequently an invited speaker for conferences and consultant for academic institutions. She has been recognized with numerous state and national honors and awards including the 2022-2023 awards of induction as a fellow into the American Academy of Nursing, and the recipient of ATS’ Distinguish Achievement Award, and Lifetime Achievement Award by ABNF.
Dr. Crowder’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing is from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Masters of Nursing from Emory University, and PhD from Indiana University.
