Dr. Charles Mathias
Charles W. Mathias, PhD, is a behavioral health researcher and Professor at the UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing and the Department of Psychiatry.
Dr. Mathias’ translational research program examines the health impact of individual risk-taking and interactions with criminal justice systems. Recognizing the influence of policy on health and justice systems, he pursued a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellowship (2019-2020), where he staffed a US Senator on the Medicaid Inmate Exclusion Policy, telehealth, surprise billing, and response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since returning to San Antonio, he has taken on policy and communications roles for projects serving the Texas Targeted Opioid Response program and the National Rural Telementoring Training Center. He has provided invited testimony to the Texas State Senate and the National Transportation Highway Safety Administration. As a Rapid Response Network member at the Research-to-Policy Collaboration, he contributes to policy analyses on behavioral health and substance use issues.
Dr. Mathias completed his BS in Psychology at Indiana University Bloomington, as well as MS and PhD degrees in Applied Biopsychology at the University of New Orleans.
