Nursing honors students and alumni present and publish research
The departmental honors program is thriving at the IU School of Nursing, Bloomington campus. Thanks to the generous funding made available through the Anita Aldrich Travel Grant, all six of this year’s departmental honors students had the opportunity to present in international forums.Rebecca Serfass worked with mentor Amy Wonder on the study “Evaluating EBP knowledge development in traditional baccalaureate nursing students.” They presented their study at the Professional Nurse Educator Group annual conference in Columbus, Ohio, and the Sigma Theta Tau International Leadership Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. Their manuscript “You’re teaching EBP to BSN students…But are they learning?” was accepted for publication in the National League for Nursing’s prestigious journal Nursing Education Perspectives. Rebecca was a finalist for the Provost Award for Undergraduate Research.
Morgan Kleppe’s project, “What makes a retirement home homey: A Q methodology study,” was presented at the Sigma Theta Tau International Leadership Conference in Indianapolis. She was also competitively selected to represent Indiana University and the National Council on Undergraduate Research conference in Memphis, Tennessee. Morgan was a finalist in for the Provost Award for Undergraduate Research. Her mentor was Desirée Hensel.
Paige Mocek and Shana Porter worked with Desirée Hensel to study “Student attitudes about undergraduate research.” Paige and Shana will be presenting as Rising Stars of Research at the Sigma Theta Tau International Research Congress in Dublin, Ireland, this summer. Jessica Lecea and Peri Kane’s will also present in Dublin. Their project was “How rurality influences sexuality in men who have sex with men.” Their mentors were Greg Carter and Desirée Hensel.
In addition to accolades for our most recent graduates, we had five departmental honors alumni publish three peer-reviewed manuscripts over the past year. Mentor Deanna Reising with honor students Rachel Fickenscher and Anna Satrom published “A comparison of differing clinical schedules for nursing students” in Nurse Educator. Mentor Desirée Hensel with honor students Rachel Cooper and Neil Craney published “Operating room personnel viewpoints about certified registered nurse anesthetists” in Western Journal of Nursing Research. Finally, honor student Paige Thur and mentor Desirée Hensel’s received notification that their manuscript “Using Q methodology to understand viewpoints in quality improvement projects” was accepted for publication in the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing.
