What has been your favorite or most memorable class or educational opportunity while studying at the IU School of Nursing? Why?
My most memorable educational experiences at the IU School of Nursing have been my OB clinical rotation at Riley Hospital for Children and my study abroad experience in Pamplona, Spain. Under the guidance of Lexi Anspach, an incredible clinical instructor, my OB rotation provided hands-on learning that solidified my passion for obstetrics. I was especially drawn to the NICU, where I witnessed the resilience of newborns and their families, further reinforcing my desire to pursue a career in neonatal nursing. Additionally, studying abroad in Pamplona, Spain was an unforgettable experience that I would recommend to all. During this week, I had the opportunity to learn about Spain’s healthcare system, immerse myself in a new culture, and connect with people from different backgrounds. These experiences have broadened my perspective as a future nurse and strengthened my adaptability in diverse healthcare settings.
What activities or organizations are you involved in, and why did you choose these groups?
I am actively involved in several organizations that have shaped my leadership and passion for service. As President of the Pakistani Student Association, I’ve fostered cultural awareness and built a strong community on campus. I also served as Director of Guest Relations for Jagathon and Secretary of the Indiana Association of Nursing Students (IANS), gaining experience in event coordination, advocacy, and communication. Throughout nursing school, I’ve been a dedicated Student Nurses’ Association (SNA) member and a mentor in the Student Nurses Partnership Program (SNPP), supporting fellow students. My volunteer work with Carmel TherAplay and the IU Student Outreach Clinic has reinforced my commitment to patient-centered care. These experiences have strengthened my leadership, mentorship, and passion for nursing.
Why was it important to you to take on extra activities and leadership roles while studying at IU Indianapolis and the IU School of Nursing?
I wanted to make the most of my undergraduate experience by taking on leadership roles that would help me grow both personally and professionally. These opportunities have strengthened my communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills—qualities that will make me a better nurse and support my interest in future leadership roles. Additionally, being involved has allowed me to give back to my community while also building a strong support system of peers and mentors.
Who has inspired you during your nursing school journey?
Throughout my nursing school journey, I have been inspired by incredible professors and supportive friends. Marian Gilhooly and Savannah Langbehn have not only been exceptional lecturers but have also created meaningful clinical experiences, taking the time to support students individually and make us feel valued. I am also grateful for the friendships I’ve built with Gurpreet (Gupi), Braelyn, and Jacy, who have been my biggest support system since our first semesters. Together, we push each other to grow, and I strive to be the best new grad nurse alongside them.
What are your plans after completing your Bachelor of Science in Nursing?
After passing the NCLEX, I plan to work in the Maternity Tower Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Riley Hospital for Children. I am excited to begin my nursing career in the NICU, where I can provide specialized care for newborns. In the long run, I hope to further my education by pursuing certifications, a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA), and potentially a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) to expand my leadership and clinical expertise.
What does the recognition of being a Top 100 student mean to you?
Being recognized as a Top 100 student is an incredible honor and a testament to the hard work and dedication I’ve put into my undergraduate journey. The past four years have been busy but deeply fulfilling, and this recognition is a meaningful way to close my time in nursing school. More than anything, it motivates me to continue striving for excellence in my career and future endeavors.
