Student Spotlight: Gillienne Boyd

Monday, October 16, 2023

Meet Gillienne Boyd! This future IU nurse is currently studying at the IU School of Nursing in Indianapolis with plans to graduate with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in Fall 2024. Learn more about Gillienne, her journey to the IU School of Nursing, and her campus involvement!

What made you want to be a nurse and attend the IU School of Nursing?

I chose the IU School of Nursing (in Indianapolis) because I liked how many hospitals are near our campus. I felt like this would give me a better opportunity to get more hands-on experience and learn my nursing skills.

How has it been so far?

It has been really good so far. I feel like I've learned a lot and have had a lot of opportunities to grow.

Do you have a favorite part so far?

My favorite part so far has been my labor and delivery clinical. I got to work in the NICU for a day during that rotation, and I really enjoyed it.

What has been your involvement on IUPUI's campus so far?

I have been involved with several different organizations. Currently, I am the Blood Drive Coordinator for the Student Nurses Association, part of the National Residence Hall Honorary, on the Regatta Steering Committee, and work as a Peer Health Educator for the Office of Health and Wellness Promotion. In the past, I was part of the Residence Hall Honorary, the Undergraduate Student Government, and a Resident Assistant at Ball Hall.

What advice to do you have for incoming students?

The advice I have for incoming students is to not procrastinate on homework assignments and plan for your homework assignments to take longer than you expected so you don't overbook your schedule! I also recommend getting involved in some way so you can grow your soft skills like communication and teamwork.

What upcoming events would you recommend?

The Student Nurses Association is holding our Halloween Blood Drive on October 31 in the IUPUI Campus Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Office of Health and Wellness Promotion also has an event called the Ooky Spooky Halloween Ball coming up on October 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the IUPUI Campus Center. This event is to raise awareness for Domestic Violence Awareness Month and collect donations for the Julian Center. We will have a costume contest and dancing too!
