Biography
Susan Rawl, PhD, RN, FAAHB, FAAN, retired in 2022 as the Doris J. Froebe Endowed Professor of Nursing at Indiana University, Co-Director of the Advanced Training in Self-Management Interventions for Serious Chronic Conditions (T32) program, and Co-leader of the Cancer Prevention and Control program at Indiana University Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her research, funded by the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute for Nursing Research, the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, and the American Cancer Society, has focused on cancer screening, prevention, early detection as well as quality of life in cancer patients and people living with an ostomy.
Rawl and her team developed and tested computer-tailored, patient-centered interventions to increase colorectal cancer screening among people at increased risk, including minority populations, those with limited resources, and low literacy levels. Rawl is serving as Chair of the National Advisory Council for the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science (2021-2023), was a member of the Board of Directors for the Indiana Cancer Consortium, and Past President of the Midwest Nursing Research Society. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Health Behaviors and the American Academy of Nursing.
The Approaches to Colon Testing program was found to be highly effective at increasing colon cancer screening in low income and minority populations.
