Dr. Gina Herron
Dr. Gina Herron is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Indiana University School of Nursing in Indianapolis, where she teaches maternal/newborn and community health nursing at the undergraduate level. Before academia, she worked as a labor and delivery nurse and unit educator at a large academic health center.Dr. Herron believes nurses at all levels hold a professional responsibility to engage in advocacy and sees an opportunity to improve future nurses’ engagement in legislative advocacy by integrating more health policy exemplars into the undergraduate curriculum. As such, she is developing innovative assignments that prepare students for maternal health and community advocacy.
Dr. Herron's recent Doctor of Nursing Practice project focused on improving nurses’ knowledge of maternal health policy and advocacy through continuing education in collaboration with her professional nursing organization, the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) Indiana Section. She also serves as a member of the AWHONN Public Policy Committee.
