Biography

Dr. Lyndsay DeGroot is a nurse scientist, leader, and educator dedicated to integrating palliative care for adults with multiple chronic conditions—especially heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease—and their caregivers. Her ICU nursing experience caring for patients and families facing critical illness deeply informs and inspires her research, which focuses on implementing evidence-based palliative care interventions in ambulatory and community-based settings.

Dr. DeGroot received her PhD in Nursing from Johns Hopkins University, where her NIH/NINR F31-funded dissertation investigated the palliative care needs of community-dwelling adults with heart failure and physical frailty. She further developed her expertise in palliative care research through a National Institute on Aging T32 Postdoctoral Fellowship in Palliative Care and Aging at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Dr. DeGroot’s work has garnered multiple external grants, including her current Career Development Award from the American Heart Association, which supports her efforts to implement community-based palliative care interventions for people living with heart failure.

As a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE), Dr. DeGroot is passionate about nursing education and has taught clinical and classroom courses focused on older adult health and evidence-based practice. She is deeply committed to preparing future nurses and researchers to advance compassionate, evidence-based care at the bedside and beyond.
