Online Courses & Self Study

Advance your career in a way that fits into your life

Online courses allow you to move your career forward and expand your expertise in a specific topic. The Center for Professional Development and Lifelong Learning is one of the few continuing education providers to offer facilitated and self-study lifelong learning and professional development in the field of nursing.

Because most online coursework is asynchronous, you have flexibility to complete requirements on your schedule and to meet your contact hour goals in a way that fits your schedule.

Getting Started in Nursing Professional Development: Focus on Facilitating Learning

(formerly Getting Started in Staff Education)

More information about Spring 2023 session will be posted soon

Make a confident transition from clinician or faculty member into a role in nursing professional development (NPD). In this facilitated online course presented in the NPD framework, you will discover concepts, strategies, and practical tools that work in all clinical disciplines.

This is a 6-week asynchronous online course. You do not need to be online at any particular time and must have all the course work completed by the course end date. We require a minimum of 10 participants to hold the course.

Successful completion of this course counts towards the required continuing education hours in nursing professional development.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center has a complete list of criteria.

Faculty subject to change without notice.

Bette says that “participants...have absolutely delighted in the opportunity...to interact with their colleagues across the country and sometimes in international locations.”

Although the course was previously titled Getting Started in Staff Development, “participants have ranged in NPD experience from those who are taking the course as a part of orienting to a new role to those who have many years of experience and lead the staff education function in their organizations. The variety of previous experiences and current roles enriches the dialogue in the discussions.”

At the completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe multiple techniques for assessing learning needs of staff members
  • Construct an effective plan to meet learning needs of staff members
  • Identify issues and strategies in implementing learning activities in a clinical setting
  • Create a sound approach to evaluating staff learning, considering process, content, and outcome evaluation

You must complete all required assignments by the course end date and the course evaluation to receive a contact hour record.
