Module 1: Organizing the precepted experience
Upon completion of this module, learners will be able to:
- Organize and structure clinical experiences for students or newly hired CNSs (“orientees”).
- Describe preclinical evaluation of student or orientee to assess learning needs.
- Develop an orientation plan for student or orientee to ensure clear communication.
Module 2: Engaging the student/orientee
Upon completion of this module, learners will be able to:
- Communicate effectively with faculty, students, and newly hired CNS orientees.
- Utilize a variety of effective teaching and learning strategies with students and orientees.
- Address challenging student or orientee situations in the clinical setting.
Module 3: Providing useful feedback
Upon completion of this module, learners will be able to:
- Explore strategies for providing student or orientee feedback.
- Develop a plan to evaluate student or orientee competency and provide feedback.
- Describe ways to instill professionalism in the student or orientee.
This is a self-study course. You can register at any time and will have 30 days from the date of your registration to complete the course and course evaluation.

$99 NACNS member rate: To receive the member rate, email cenurse@iu.edu with your first and last name and NACNS member number. Please be sure to indicate in your email that you are interested in receiving the member rate. We will confirm your membership status with NACNS and provide additional registration instructions. 3 or more group rate: A group rate of $99 each is available for 3 or more individuals registering from the same organization, taking the course during the same 30-day timeframe. Institution Annual Group Rate: We now offer a highly discounted flat rate of $499 for up to 10 preceptors from an academic or healthcare institution to take the course. Organizations may enroll up to 10 individuals over the duration of the 12-month period, which begins on the date the fee is paid.
Institutions must assign a contact person who will serve as the communication lead with the IUSON and who will assist participants in setting up their online guest accounts through IU to allow us to add them to the course when requested.
No refunds or partial refunds are provided once this fee is paid, regardless of whether all 10 registrations are utilized in the 12-month period, or whether the registered individuals have completed the course as directed. Please email cenurse@iu.edu for more information and to get started!
The “Developing your Skills as a CNS Preceptor” course was developed in 2016 by a team of Clinical Nurse Specialists and faculty members from Indiana University School of Nursing and the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists. It was updated in 2019 and 2021 following expert review.

Successful Completion of the Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Activity
In order to receive contact hours for the CNE activity you must complete the online course evaluation at the end of the course period.

No commercial support has been received for this activity. The absence of commercial bias will be evaluated in the institute evaluation survey.
